Understanding Children

 

Trainees will first gain an introductory understanding of the emotional and physical needs of children in the context of child and adolescent development to support their learning about the “why” behind the behaviors of many youth experiencing foster care. By delving deeper into how abuse and trauma impact children and adolescent, trainees will be better equipped to advocate for appropriate supports and healing for the youth they serve.

Goals for this class include:

  • Better understand the emotional and behavioral health needs of children and adolescents experiencing foster care.

  • Discuss the importance of attachment and the impact of separation.

  • Identify potential impact of trauma on the brain and development.

  • Discuss resilience and recovery and the importance of family, healthy relationships, and relational permanency.

  • Develop an approach for how volunteer advocates can collaborate with the team to address emotional and behavioral health issues.
