EYES ON CALIFORNIA: EXTENDED FOSTER CARE AS A TOOL TO PREVENT YOUTH HOMELESSNESS
Wednesday, December 10, 2025 10:00 - 11:30 AM via Zoom
Join the Transition-Age Youth Research and Evaluation Hub (TAY-Hub) and John Burton Advocates for Youth (JBAY) for a conversation about new insights from the California Youth Transitions to Adulthood (CalYOUTH) Study. This webinar will unveil a fresh analysis linking CalYOUTH and state administrative data to better understand how extended foster care and the types of placements young people receive shape their risk of homelessness.
The findings are timely as the state embarks on reform of its foster care rates: Nearly 1 in 5 youth experience homelessness between ages 17 and 19; youth who exit care before age 19 are three times more likely to experience homelessness than those who stay; and supportive housing placements—specifically the Transitional Housing Placement for Non-Minor Dependents (THP-NMD) and Foster Family Agency (FFA) homes—stand out as the strongest protections against homelessness.
The session will feature TAY-Hub Co-Director, Dr. Mark Courtney who will walk participants through the research, followed by Selena Liu-Raphael with the California Alliance of Child and Family Services, who will discuss county-level differences in supportive placements, youth engagement, and opportunities to strengthen California’s extended foster care system.
HOLIDAY BLUES: WORKING WITH YOUTH WHO ARE STRESSED AND DEPRESSED with Dr. Natalia Estassi
Monday, December 15th at 6-8 PM via Zoom (2 CE Credits).
Stress can increase their depression, anxiety, and trigger suicidal thoughts. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 1 million people die each year from suicide. It is the SECOND leading cause of death for ages 10-24 and the THIRD leading cause of death for college-age youth and ages 12-18. Four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warning signs. Learn how to recognize these warning signs and what you can do to save a life. Review the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety and how they are directly linked to suicide. Study misconceptions about suicide and how to address them in your work. Discuss several tips on preventing suicide, including how to assess the level of suicide risk. Explore common suicide risk factors for children and teens, including problems that may trigger a suicide attempt. Examine alarming statistics to remind you of your crucial role as providers to assess and address suicide with all our youth. Learn how you can make a difference!
